Oil on board painting of Walbach Tower in gold frame. Paper glued to rear: "Painting of Walbach Tower Fort Constitution, New Castle N.H. By: Elizabeth "Lizzie" (White) Rand daughter of Captain White of Oliver Street, New Castle. Painting made: 1895. 'The Martello Tower' was built during the War of 1812 by Col. Walbach a German and long in service of the United States. He was in command of Fort Constitution from 1806-1821. This is the only Martello Tower on the Northern Coast. It has always borne (Col) Walbach as the name of the tower and was built on the ridge of a ledge anciently called Jourdan's Rocks. 'There just above the shore, is Walbach Tower, its crumping parapet with grass and weeds o'er grown, and peaceful in its slow decay. Located - near- (A little west of old Fort William & Mary, lies the ruins.)" The painting was in a plastic bag with label: "These items are to be given to the Town of New Castle for 1993 celebration from Joseph P. Copley Collection." |
