This folder is labeled 1765 and contains 3 documents. A: Notice to appear for a meeting on March 5, to choose the selectmen and town officers and "to transact any affair that may be thought needful relating to the bridge." It is dated March 2, 1765 and signed Joseph Newmarch, Town Clerk. On the reverse side it says that Captain Joseph Frost was appointed to work on the bridge, but he refused because he had debts to pay. Signed, Joseph Newmarch B: The town account with Meshach Bell, 1763-1766 The town bought rum, wine, cyder, punch, and other items. It includes a debt from Capt. Frost's account. Meshach Bell, Jr. received some payment in 1766 C: Dated May 12, 1768. A statement and letter from the city of New Castle to a ship, the Epes with Captain Greenough, that had arrived from Antigua, asking for a letter from the captain stating the condition of the men as it relates to the outbreak of smallpox in Antigua. However, the sailors refused to allow the New Castle men to board the ship, and gave three accounts as to how long they had been at sea, and two accounts as to why their captain was unable to speak with them. |
